History Of Hemp

Hemp has a long history of many past and current uses including textiles for clothing, industrial products, building materials, manufacturing, oil paints, solvents, fuel, paper, soaps, shampoos, cosmetics, food, and medicinal purposes, to name a few. Historical records reveal that cannabis has long held a strong and prominent position in medicine. Dating back as far as 2000 BC, hemp plants have been used for various medicinal and industrial purposes. It is thoroughly described in Indian Ayurvedic medicine and the plant was cultivated as early as 900 BC. In 1839, Dr. William Brooke O'Shaughnessy introduced the Western world to the medicinal uses of C. indica, or “Indian hemp,” after his time in Kolkata, India. The rising use of medicinal cannabis was derailed by political factors in the United States that mainly consisted of familiar propaganda. Cannabis came to be viewed as a drug of abuse that was used by minority and low-income communities. It was also frequently linked with stories of psychosis, addiction, and violent crime. Historians have stated that the purpose was to reduce the size of the growing hemp industry because of its potential impact on the “man-made” phenobarbital and phenytoin and its competition with other industries like synthetic fibers, such as nylon. These claims and agenda led to the Marihuana Tax Act of 1937, despite the American Medical Association's (AMA) strong opposition to this legislation. This law imposed a heavy tax, prison or large fines on anyone associated with cannabis and hemp for medicinal or industrial uses. The protest from the medical community could not overcome the political powers pushing for the ban on cannabis. By 1941, all cannabis preparations were removed from the USP and National Formulary. Today, more and more people are seeing the benefits of cannabis for a wide array of conditions and disease. To date: —— states have approved THC limited use. Georgia’s medical marijuana law allows certain qualified persons to legally possess up to 20 fluid ounces of “low THC oil,” which is derived from the marijuana plant.
